From the outstanding 2019 vintage and from one of the world's greatest wine makers, this lovely red Burgundy wine scored 96-98/100 Parker points, "The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is very promising, unwinding in the glass with aromas of exotic spices, grilled meats, cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and loamy soil. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it was the most introverted, tightly wound wine in the cellar on the day of my visit. Broad-shouldered and elegantly muscular, it's bright and precise, concluding with a penetrating finish." Drink now - 2055. Scoring 92/100 Parker points "Consistently one of the reference points for Italian wines, Angelo Gaja has fashioned some spectacular new releases. Gaja's long-time dream of owning vineyards in Barolo has finally been realized. No one who loves his wines will be disappointed with his first two Barolo releases. Moreover, by Gaja's standards, even the price is palatable. The 1988 Barolo-Sperss exhibits a deep color, tremendous extraction of fruit, and soft acids and tannins. It is a backward, unevolved, potentially exceptional wine. Tightly packed, full-bodied, and muscular, its wonderful tar, rose, and black-cherry-scented nose is just beginning to emerge." From the outstanding 2020 vintage and from the very rare Domaine Sylvian Cathiard & Fils vineyards, this super red wine scored 92-6/100 points by Jasper Morris and Burghound stated "A markedly more restrained nose only reluctantly displays its array of much more floral scented red currant, cherry and anise whiffs. Somewhat surprisingly, the larger-scaled flavours are not quite as dense but even so they are more powerful, muscular and minerality while the overtly firm supporting structure really becomes apparent on the dusty, youthfully austere and explosively long finish. As is usually the case at this stage, the Cathiard Malconsorts is largely a block of potential so plenty of patience will be required but it should ultimately be brilliant." Drink now - 2045. The bouquet is surprisingly evolved, offering up scents of cedar, sweet black fruits, lead pencil, and toasty oak. This elegant, medium-bodied restrained wine is beautifully made, stylish, and not dissimilar to the '85. "Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the debut 1991 Valandraud had a slight degradation on the rim with a russet colored core. The bouquet is very pleasant, still fresh and delineated with degraded red berry fruit, leather, dried blood and a touch of chestnut. The palate is fully matured with soft tannin held up by the acidity. It feels loose-knit, a little "saggy" on the mid-palate where I am sure it once had focus and delineation, and it gently fades to a rather austere and earthy finish. From the outstanding 1985 vintage and scoring 94/100 Parker points, "While not as powerful and concentrated as the 1986, 1983, or 1982, the 1985 Margaux is more charming and, at present, more complex than those more backward vintages. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple. The seductive nose offers copious quantities of lavishly ripe black berry and cassis fruit intermixed with toasty oak and floral scents. This rich, expansive, and velvety-textured wine has developed more length, and additional flavor dimensions over the last several years. From the very good 1993 and scoring 92/100 points by Wine Advocate, this stunning Barolo has a super nose with a nice spectrum of fresh red fruits. Rose petals, a little tar and smoke. it is firm with ripe and suave tannins. It has great structure and minerality with a long strong finish. Drink now 2040. From the very good 1961 vintage, " I have been warned on several occasions to stay away from the slippery slope known as Grand Cru Burgundy. Tonight I slide further down the hill. I had never tasted a mature Richebourg before tonight. This producer is very "old school" which was fine with me. An "ah-so" removed the cork without incident. The color of the wine was ruby with only a slight amount of bricking at the rim. The nose was captivating from the start with mushrooms, damp earth, and a slight anise smell. Nice acidity and the typical earthiness you would expect was present on the palate. After about 30 minutes, a sweetness of fruit lingered in your mouth as the finish lasted a good 45-60 seconds. This is definitely a food wine and it paired absolutely beautifully with dry aged squab. In fact, this may have been the best pairing I have ever had with mature Burgundy (even better than duck). It took me over 15 years to achieve my Burgundy epiphany. I definitely should have listened to my many mentors and stayed far away from this devilish region. From the outstanding 1998 vintage and scoring 100/100 Parker points "I've been lucky enough to have the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin numerous times recently and it has never failed to deliver everything I could want from a wine. Getting the best parcel of Grenache from the estate and a dramatically shifted blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah and Counoise, it's a massive and concentrated Chateauneuf that surprisingly still seems to show its Mourvedre component front and center. Blackberries, kirsch, truffle, gamy meats, licorice and earth all give way to a full-bodied, seamless, impeccably balanced wine that carries its huge core of fruit with remarkable freshness and grace. From the outstanding 1981 vintage and scoring 97/100 Parker points, "The 1981 stood out as slightly superior. Winemaker John Duval always felt this was a tannic style of Grange, but the wine has shed its tannins, and this is one of the few vintages where the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was above 10%. Sweet notes of creme de cassis, cedarwood, charcoal, and barbecue spices are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine displaying heady amounts of alcohol, glycerin, and density in its full-bodied, skyscraper-like texture. I was drinking this wine with great pleasure in the mid-nineties, yet here it is nearly 15 years later, and the wine does not appear to have budged much from its evolutionary state. This is a testament to how remarkably well these wines hold up, and age at such a glacial pace." Drink now - 2033.
