Ref: 17251/A44

From the outstanding 2009 vintage, this Chateau D'yquem scored 100/100 Parker points "The 2009 Chateau d’Yquem is one showstopper of a wine and perhaps it is only in a vertical that you realize this is up there among the legendary wines of the past the 2001 included. It has a wonderful nose that expresses the Semillon component majestically: heady aromas of lemon curd, nectarine, jasmine and honeysuckle that all gain momentum in the glass. The oak is supremely well-integrated. The palate is extremely well-balanced with an unctuous entry. You are immediately knocked sideways by the palpable weight and volume in the mouth, which is almost bulbous, with layer upon layer of heavily botrytized fruit. It builds to a spicy finish with hints of marzipan and pralines in the background that lend it an untrammeled sense of exoticism. The 2009 is utterly fabulous and decadent, a star that will blaze brightly and undimmed for many years. Drink now-2060+." A stunning Christening gift.

The 1945 vintage in Bordeaux was outstanding despite the end of the War. The growing conditions were perfect with a warm, sunny dry growing season and a hot summer. The drought like conditions produced very tannic wines from the concentrated grapes and this led to wines with extraordinary ageing potential. Many believe this is the vintage of the Century and the wines that survive have achieved legendary status.

I have had this many times - don't ask! Huge sugar, high alcohol wine. It was the year of an extremely rare frost on 2 May. There were 6 'waves' of picking over 6 weeks, similar to 2005. Wonderful nose of the caramel crust of a creme brulee and Seville oranges. Drink with a cream made with ground almonds. So multi-dimensional, deep and intense. The volatility varies with the bottles, but the majestic quality does not. Last tasted from magnum in 2007. Incredible Seville oranges bouquet. The most pure, figgy fruit of any 1945 I have had. Pomegranates. So much balance and fabulously complete and complex. Endless on the palate. On this showing, not 3 star, but 4 star. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
