1945 was probably the greatest vintage for Bordeaux of the last century with an early harvest yielding magnificent long lasting vintage wines of the highest quality. It was the same story in Burgundy and the Northern Rhone. In Portugal, some of the greatest vintage ports of the last century were made and they are still drinking beautifully.

Good weather throughout Europe led to a good vintage in Bordeaux. The 1946 vintage in Bordeaux was good and started with a cold rainy Spring that hindered flowering. The vintage was saved by a warm dry Summer which continued into October. The harvest commenced in mid September. There was a poor vintage in Burgundy and the North and South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal some outstanding Colheita (Tawny) ports were made. Armagnac is a good choice for this vintage or Rivesaltes, the sweet red wine from the South of France, which is newly bottled having been stored in cask and is drinking beautifully with vintage port like flavours.

Produced between 1904-1989 in Tarragona (Spain) after the Carthusian Monks were exiled from France. In 1989 the distillery in Tarragona closed down and the production of this liquor returned to France. Nowadays the bottles produce in the distillery of Tarragona have become one of the most expensive and sought after liquors in the world. The recipe contains more than 130 different plants and flowers, the Mediterranean character of the Tarragona distillery is bottled in this unique and limited liquor.

The Massandra Winery was founded in 1894 by Tsar Nicholas II on the outskirts of Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, and was the official supplier of fine wines to the royal family whilst they were on vacation at their summer palace in Livadia. Many of the sweet fortified wines from the Massandra Collection are exceptionally rare and incredibly long-lived, with most only reaching maturity at around 50 to 60 years of age. The production of ‘Port’ wine was started by the original Massandra winemaker, Prince Golitzin. It was made from multiple red grape varieties grown in several different regions, fortified to between 17-19% and aged for three years in large oak casks. Drink now - 2043.
