1995 was a very good vintage in Bordeaux with a mild winter and warm spring. The summer was hot and punctuated by light rains in September. Dry weather lasted well into October, so the grapes remained on the vines longer. Rich and firm wines were made with the wines in St-Julien and Pauillac being the pick of the vintage. A vintage for drinkable wines to be consumed in the short to medium term. 1995 was very successful for Red Burgundy and White Burgundy. It was a good vintage in the North and outstanding in the South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal, there was a single Quinta declaration which produced some very good vintage ports.

Good summer weather produced a very good vintage in Bordeaux .1996 was a very good vintage for red Burgundy and outstanding for white Burgundy. A good vintage was produced in the Rhone Valley. Good blueberry fruit, quite aromatic with violet scents but also meaty notes. Good, rich blackberry fruit on the palate and very drying tannins. Some vanilla flavour and more character." The color is black/purple, and the wine is extremely concentrated, but unevolved and impossible to penetrate. It could turn out like the '83 and never develop as well as its early promise suggests. Scoring 89/100 Parker points and from the very good 1996 vintage, "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Phelan-Segur is actually a wine that I tasted regularly around the turn of the millennium. It is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has always been a decent Saint Estèphe and there is much to like about it 20 years on. The bouquet is well defined and fresher than the 1986 Phelan-Segur tasted alongside: blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of crushed stone. It is classier than some might presuppose. The palate is well balanced, fleshy for a 1996 with ample black cherry, raspberry, sage, game and cedar notes. Quite cohesive in the mouth with fine structure, it is not the most sophisticated Saint Estèphe on the block, yet it continues to give satisfying drinking pleasure and complexity. This is a gutsy Phelan-Segur (a word used by one Robert Parker when tasting this same wine from barrel) and I could easily see this giving another decade's worth of pleasure." Drink now - 2034.

Scoring 98-100/100 Parker points, this Bordeaux red wine from the very good 1996 vintage is "My tasting notes for this wine begin with the following words "wow, wow, wow!" I had been looking forward to retasting this 1996 since I had it in spring, 1997, and I was not disappointed by its evolution. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and an attention-getting, staggering, sweet nose that offers the essence of black currant fruit, kirsch, and minerals as well as the essence of Leoville-Las-Cases's personality. It is fabulously concentrated, with the sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the wine's most undeniable hallmarks. When measured, the tannin level is extremely high, but you would never know that when tasting this wine because of the massive amount of extract, purity, and virtually perfect equilibrium. Despite its rare combination of unbridled power and complexity, this wine has beaucoup de finesse, as well as a finish that lasts close to 45 seconds. A candidate for a perfect rating, it is a modern day legend in the making. Will it surpass the 1986 and 1982? Time will tell. Only 40% of the total harvest was used in the 1996, with the final blend containing a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than usual." Drink now - 2033. A lovely gift.
