For the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification system for France's best Bordeaux wines which were to be on display for visitors from around the world. Brokers from the wine industry ranked the wines according to a château's reputation and trading price, which at that time was directly related to quality. The result was the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The wines were ranked in importance from first to fifth growths (crus). All of the red wines that made it on the list came from the Médoc region except for one: Château Haut-Brion from Graves. Within each category, the various châteaux are ranked in order of quality and only twice since the 1855 classification has there been a change, first when in 1856 Château Cantemerle was added as a fifth growth and, more significantly, in 1973, when Château Mouton Rothschild was elevated from a second growth to a first growth vineyard after decades of intense lobbying by the powerful Philippe de Rothschild. From the very good 2006 vintage and scoring 93/100 Parker points and from the outstanding 2002 vintage "The 2006 Chablis Fourchaume Vignoble de Vaulorent (from their top parcel in that site) is effectively Fevre’s seventh grand cru, and given that it lives up to this billing, an outstanding value as well. Musky, sweetly floral notes like that of some exotic orchid mingle with saline and savory shrimp shell suggestions in the nose. Densely-concentrated, with a deep, oceanic brininess and mysteriously sweet yet mineral savor, this may not have the elegance or refinement of the 'regular' Fourchaume, but it more than makes up for this in intensity, complexity, and sheer grip. I would give this 2-3 years in bottle before tasting it (again) and anticipate 12-15 years of fascinating bottle evolution. The 2005 combines similarly pungent, exotic, alluring florality with riveting mineral intrigue." Drink now - 2024. A stunning gift.
