On 23rd July 1929 the King's grandson, the Prince of Wales and later Edward VIII, continued the tradition by mashing this special ale at the brewery. The King had visited the brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in 1902 to brew a special "Kings Ale". Unlike his Grandfather, Edward arrived by air and flew back to London on the same day. Quite an exceptional effort for the time! These bottles were all sealed with red wax, with the Bass logo embossed onto it.The beer was sold in many places and was said to be available up to 1945. It is approx 30cms tall, the level is at the top of the bottle shoulder. We believe that this bottle may be one of the rarer Quart sized bottle releases. Violet Frères was founded in 1866 by brothers Simon and Pallade Violet, who originally began as street vendors before starting to import wine from Spain. The brothers' best known product, Byrrh, was created by blending their local Roussillon wines with herbs and plants including cinchona. Violet Frères sold the product to pharmacists, grocers and coffee shops, and by 1910 the company had more than 750 employees and distributed over 30 million litres of Byrrh per year. Our wine buyer unearthed a most interesting find in a house in Manchester. In 1895, the Carmel Wine Company was formed to sell wines of Rishon Le Zion and Zichron Ya’acov Wine Cellars in export markets. Offices were opened in Warsaw, Vienna and Berlin. In 1898, a wine import and marketing company was formed in London. This traded as The Palestine Wine & Trading Co. The Palestine Wine Company started marketing wines with the brand name: PALWIN, which was an abbreviation for PALestine WINe. Palwin was the first brand sold in export markets by the Israeli wine industry. It is also the oldest brand still in existence in the kosher wine world. One wine was differentiated from another by a series of numbers, because new immigrants had trouble reading English, but there was no problem identifying numbers. It is believed this bottle dates from the 1950's.
