Scoring 92/100 by Tom Cannavan, "Very black/brown colour. Quite an exotic undertow to this wine on the nose, which although quite oxidised and nutty, has developed all sorts of incense-like smoky and spice notes, but also hints of guava and ripe tropical fruit. On the palate it has a delicious sweetness, that is very rounded and rich, with a full plum and quince jam richness, and delicious lip-smacking tang of Seville orange and grapefruit acidity. Lovely integration here, with concentration and plenty of life about it, though perhaps not the ultimate complexity of some." Drink now - 2050. From the stunning 1955 vintage and scoring 98/100 by the Wine cellar insidrer,Wine like this reminds me I do not drink enough Port. Decanted 4 hours before service, the sweet, ripe, warm, rich, chocolate-covered cherries, spice, orange peel and plum liqueur hit all the right notes. From the outstanding 1955 vintage produced this deep coloured port scored 19/20 by Jancis Robinson 'The only vintage Taylor's declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, 'one of the most underrated vintages of the century'. Taylor's own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor's produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May. Rain at the end of May was beneficial for the flowering. July and August were hot, and at the time of the vintage the bunches were in excellent condition. The general starting date for the vintage was on the 26 September, and a shower on the 22 September did a lot of good. Light rain fell on 2 and 3 October but did no harm, and helped cool the temperature. Mid rose red. This somehow not only looks but tastes rose red. Lovely and lifted and fresh. There's a real core of excitement to this. How lovely!' Drink now - 2038. From the very good 1961 vintage, " I have been warned on several occasions to stay away from the slippery slope known as Grand Cru Burgundy. Tonight I slide further down the hill. I had never tasted a mature Richebourg before tonight. This producer is very "old school" which was fine with me. An "ah-so" removed the cork without incident. The color of the wine was ruby with only a slight amount of bricking at the rim. The nose was captivating from the start with mushrooms, damp earth, and a slight anise smell. Nice acidity and the typical earthiness you would expect was present on the palate. After about 30 minutes, a sweetness of fruit lingered in your mouth as the finish lasted a good 45-60 seconds. This is definitely a food wine and it paired absolutely beautifully with dry aged squab. In fact, this may have been the best pairing I have ever had with mature Burgundy (even better than duck). It took me over 15 years to achieve my Burgundy epiphany. I definitely should have listened to my many mentors and stayed far away from this devilish region. All I can say is it is now too late."(Wine Spectator forum notes) Drink now - 2031.Very bin soiled label. Founded in 1817, Brackla distillery was the first in Scotland to be granted a Royal Warrant, becoming Royal Brackla at the behest of King William IV in 1835. The distillery was primarily tasked with providing malt for blending, and became part of DCL (now Diageo) in 1943. It was one of the many distilleries that they were forced to close due to a production surplus in the 1980s however, mothballed between 1985 and 1991. Royal Brackla was sold along with the rest of those associated with the Dewar's brand to Bacardi in 1998. It was not until 2014 under Bacardi ownership that a widely distributed unique single malt brand first appeared. Independent releases from all eras have become increasingly sought after. From the outstanding 1985 vintage and scoring 94/100 Parker points, "While not as powerful and concentrated as the 1986, 1983, or 1982, the 1985 Margaux is more charming and, at present, more complex than those more backward vintages. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple. The seductive nose offers copious quantities of lavishly ripe black berry and cassis fruit intermixed with toasty oak and floral scents. This rich, expansive, and velvety-textured wine has developed more length, and additional flavor dimensions over the last several years. It has always been a remarkably approachable and enjoyable wine, but it appears to be taking on more character and quality than I ever imagined." Drink now - 2033. A stunning anniversary gift. This D'Yquem scores 96/100 Parker points and "Tasted blind in Bordeaux, the 1976 Chateau d'Yquem reaffirms its reputation as one of the great wines of the decade, although I would suggest that that 1971 and 1975 are the true pinnacles. However, in no way do I wish to slight this Sauternes. Deep and slightly burnished in color, it offers dried pineapple, barley sugar, almond and a cheeky puff of café latte. There is wonderful definition here. The palate is underpinned by nigh on perfect acidity with orange rind, mango, crème brûlée and minerals. As it fans out towards the finish, there is a tang of Seville orange marmalade, and though it does not quite possess the persistence of the 1975 Yquem, you will be craving for the next sip. At its peak now, enjoy this great Yquem over the next 20-30 years." Drink now - 2039. "Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the debut 1991 Valandraud had a slight degradation on the rim with a russet colored core. The bouquet is very pleasant, still fresh and delineated with degraded red berry fruit, leather, dried blood and a touch of chestnut. The palate is fully matured with soft tannin held up by the acidity. It feels loose-knit, a little "saggy" on the mid-palate where I am sure it once had focus and delineation, and it gently fades to a rather austere and earthy finish. It is certainly not undrinkable by a long stretch, although now the aromatics have more to offer than the palate." Neal Martin 86/100 Drink now - 2031. Bottle number 00731 of 1500 bottles produced.
