Founded in 1817, Brackla distillery was the first in Scotland to be granted a Royal Warrant, becoming Royal Brackla at the behest of King William IV in 1835. The distillery was primarily tasked with providing malt for blending, and became part of DCL (now Diageo) in 1943. It was one of the many distilleries that they were forced to close due to a production surplus in the 1980s however, mothballed between 1985 and 1991. Royal Brackla was sold along with the rest of those associated with the Dewar's brand to Bacardi in 1998. It was not until 2014 under Bacardi ownership that a widely distributed unique single malt brand first appeared. Independent releases from all eras have become increasingly sought after. "Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the debut 1991 Valandraud had a slight degradation on the rim with a russet colored core. The bouquet is very pleasant, still fresh and delineated with degraded red berry fruit, leather, dried blood and a touch of chestnut. The palate is fully matured with soft tannin held up by the acidity. It feels loose-knit, a little "saggy" on the mid-palate where I am sure it once had focus and delineation, and it gently fades to a rather austere and earthy finish. The Massandra Winery was founded in 1894 by Tsar Nicholas II on the outskirts of Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, and was the official supplier of fine wines to the royal family whilst they were on vacation at their summer palace in Livadia. Many of the sweet fortified wines from the Massandra Collection are exceptionally rare and incredibly long-lived, with most only reaching maturity at around 50 to 60 years of age. The production of ‘Port’ wine was started by the original Massandra winemaker, Prince Golitzin. It was made from multiple red grape varieties grown in several different regions, fortified to between 17-19% and aged for three years in large oak casks. Drink now - 2043. This extremely rare Garrafeira Port from the 1935 vintage was bottled in 1974 and is tawny coloured and is smooth and mellow with a long rich finish. Drink now - 2044. Garrafeira Port is a very rare style of Port made from the grapes of a single harvest After ageing in wood for three to six years the wine is transferred to glass demijohns ("bon bons") which can vary from seven to eleven liters apiece, and continues ageing in glass. This type of ageing adds a unique character known as "cheiro has garrafa" (translates to: savour or essence of the bottle) which is derived from prolonged direct contact with the glass demijohns. Further ageing in the demijohns, sometimes for well over 50 years; helps to produce a seamless, smooth Port that is delicate, fresh and possesses great finesse. A super anniversary gift.
