Good summer weather produced a very good vintage in Bordeaux .1996 was a very good vintage for red Burgundy and outstanding for white Burgundy. A good vintage was produced in the Rhone Valley. In Portugal, some good single Quinta vintage ports were made. It was an outstanding Vintage in Champagne. It was a very good year for wines from Italy and Spain.

Good blueberry fruit, quite aromatic with violet scents but also meaty notes. Good, rich blackberry fruit on the palate and very drying tannins. Some vanilla flavour and more character." Scoring 94/100 Parker points, "The NV 30 Years Tawny Port was bottled in 2013 with a bar-top cork and 125 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is smoother and more harmonious than the Dow this issue, a contrast in house styles. If the Dow's this issue often seemed stern, tight and brooding, this is sexy, sunny and lively, with a burst of sugar on the finish. It starts a little understated and certainly elegant, but it gathers strength and length on the finish. Supple on the first pour, it then adds a touch of brandy, a hit of sugar and a lot of dark chocolate on the finish just to remind you that this is indeed an old, complex Tawny. The next day, it is beautiful, focused, well balanced and precise. The lifted fruit seems to last indefinitely on the palate. After a week or so, it was darker and more intense." Drink now - 2044. Scoring 89/100 Parker points and from the very good 1996 vintage, "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Phelan-Segur is actually a wine that I tasted regularly around the turn of the millennium. It is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has always been a decent Saint Estèphe and there is much to like about it 20 years on. The bouquet is well defined and fresher than the 1986 Phelan-Segur tasted alongside: blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of crushed stone. It is classier than some might presuppose. The palate is well balanced, fleshy for a 1996 with ample black cherry, raspberry, sage, game and cedar notes. Quite cohesive in the mouth with fine structure, it is not the most sophisticated Saint Estèphe on the block, yet it continues to give satisfying drinking pleasure and complexity. This is a gutsy Phelan-Segur (a word used by one Robert Parker when tasting this same wine from barrel) and I could easily see this giving another decade's worth of pleasure." Drink now - 2034.
