1997 was a successful vintage in Bordeaux with a warm February and the hottest spring for 50 years. There was rain in May but it was hot and sunny for the second half of August. The grapes were harvested early except for the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal that were picked later for more ripeness. A vintage for drinkable wines to be consumed in the short to medium term. 1997 was very successful for Red Burgundy and excellent for White Burgundy. It was a good vintage in the North and South of the Cote du Rhone. In Portugal, there was a small, though high quality crop which produced some very good vintage ports.
