From the very good 1999 vintage amd scoring 90/100 points from Wine Spectator, this is an outstanding Bernoota, made from a 50/50 blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep crimson colour with crimson mauve hue. On the nose, aroma of liquorice, vanilla, violets over a ripe plum end note. The palate is impressive, with distinct flavours of blackpepper, blackberry and blackcurrant. Excellent length, with the blackpepper remaining in the background. Fine grained tannins perfect balance, followed by very long blackpepper and blackcurrant aftertaste.his is an exquisite multidimensional wine outrageously rich, wonderfully textured and full bodied with a cascade of fruit and glycerine that melt on the palate. Oz wine writing wizard James Halliday says "there is a good argument to be made that it should be Bin 28, rather than Bin 389, which is 'Poor Man's Grange'" because "the emphasis is on the same lush fruit; the oak used is second - and third - use American barrels handed down through the Grange and Bin 389 programmes." In 2001 look for expressive spicy, white pepper, smoky bacon, licorice, black berry jam aromas with a touch of black raspberry fruit. A rich, ripe, smooth entry with chocolate, sweet vanilla, peppery, black cherry jam and some smoky, meaty notes on the finish.
