Deep crimson, spices and cocoa flit around very dark berry fruits. There's a touch of curry leaf, and balsamic notes that are dark and subtle. The palate is exceptionally smooth and silky, the plum and blackcurrant gloss of fruit melts into a bittersweet chocolate and raisin fudge depth, a nice zestiness to the acidity extending the finish." From the very good 2005 vintage and scoring 91/100 Parker points, "The 2005 QUINTA DA GRICHA is impeccably balanced, bright and graceful, with lovely flavors. It is quite charming. In a few months, from the time I tasted it in Portugal to the time I retasted it in the United States, it improved dramatically in the bottle, and fleshed out noticeably, which it needed to do. The tannins are ripe and reasonably well tamed, but the wine does have a backbone and structure. It has a lush first attack, but this continues on with more intensity and penetration, evolving well for hours. It also has a finish that is gripping and lingering, and that becomes more and more intense with air. The mid-palate is well on the elegant side. There were times when the wine seemed a little too elegant and understated for its USA price point (thank the exchange rate problems in large part for that), but the fruit is lovely. It expands in the glass, and the wine is so charming, with a certain Burgundian feel to it, that it is hard to resist. In particular, I really began enjoying a certain red berry note nuance to this wine as it aired out. Give it a couple of hours to wake up and you’ll be more convinced." Drink now - 2040. It is made from only Chardonnay grapes harvested in a Premier Cru in the Blagny area, the blend then matures in the cellar for 16 months in barriques. The colour is straw yellow with golden reflections and on the nose emerge intense scents of lemon, lime, acacia alternating with mineral and saline sesations. Scoring 89/100 Parker points and from the very good 1996 vintage, "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Phelan-Segur is actually a wine that I tasted regularly around the turn of the millennium. It is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has always been a decent Saint Estèphe and there is much to like about it 20 years on. The bouquet is well defined and fresher than the 1986 Phelan-Segur tasted alongside: blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of crushed stone. It is classier than some might presuppose. The palate is well balanced, fleshy for a 1996 with ample black cherry, raspberry, sage, game and cedar notes. Quite cohesive in the mouth with fine structure, it is not the most sophisticated Saint Estèphe on the block, yet it continues to give satisfying drinking pleasure and complexity. This is a gutsy Phelan-Segur (a word used by one Robert Parker when tasting this same wine from barrel) and I could easily see this giving another decade's worth of pleasure." Drink now - 2034.
