"Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the debut 1991 Valandraud had a slight degradation on the rim with a russet colored core. The bouquet is very pleasant, still fresh and delineated with degraded red berry fruit, leather, dried blood and a touch of chestnut. The palate is fully matured with soft tannin held up by the acidity. It feels loose-knit, a little "saggy" on the mid-palate where I am sure it once had focus and delineation, and it gently fades to a rather austere and earthy finish. This bottle is a rare unique find. It is from the era when customs the Government Chemist at Customs House London would check bottles that were being imported into the UK. It was created in 1842 to help safeguard government revenue and this bottle is dated from 1948 when they would have removed some of the contents, tested the Rum and then recorked the bottle and put their stamp onto the wax seal. This bottling is a 20cl bottle of This Macallan Glenlivet 17 Year Old Single Malt Whisky which was distilled in 1963 and bottled in 1980 at 75% proof. Whiskyfun.com "Here’s a rare old unsherried Macallan, just one month older than Olivier. Quite unusual! The colour is incredibly pale, like some white wine’s, and at first nosing it’s mellow and warming. Beautiful nose with cold coffee, flowers from the fields, freshly cut apple, gooseberry. No sherry at all. Hints of liquorice, gets a little grassy. Very nice, it helps check that Macallan is a very fine distillery, not only a special wood treatment factory. The first mouthfeel is quite balanced, but extremely powerful. Malty and yeasty (fresh bread crumb), then grassy (rhubarb) with lots of liquorice stick and wood. Gets a little too spirity (pear, apple). Too bad, the palate doesn’t match the nose. Again, it’s bold and robust, but a little too simple: it lacks some finesse, even if we can find some interesting aspects in it. No need to tell that nobody would say it’s Macallan when tasting it blind In fact, both Olivier and I become to feel tired after having tasted all these unsherried cask strength Speysiders. The palate is very harmonious with kirsch and orange zest on the entry, almost sorbet-fresh with saturated tannins. The finish is quite linear yet with a slightly confit aftertaste. Scoring 94/100 Parker points, "The 1976 Único was produced with 60% Tinto Fino, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 2% Malbec and Albillo with 13.5% alcohol, and it probably aged longer in oak and was possibly bottled at different times according to demand. There might be some bottle variation in the old wines (like elsewhere in the world, it was not the same as today...), and the 1970s were not the best decade for Único. But this 1976 was quite good, better than the 1972 but not as good as the 1974, ripe, juicy and a bit liquorous, despite keeping the poise at 13.5% alcohol. It's tasty and supple, rounder and with more volume, more in the style of the rounder years. Production was "only" 37,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums. " Drink now - 2030.
