This Very Rare Old Tres Cortados Sherry was a 250th Anniversary bottlimng to celebrate the 1730-1980 anniversary of Pedro Domecq. It was personally selected by Jose Ignacio Domecq. Only sherry that had been aged for over 50 years and was limited to only 6000 bottles.

Palo Cortado is a unique style of sherry which owes its character in equal parts to human intent and natural intervention. The wine begins it's maturation as a tangy Fino sherry, under a protective flor (layer) of yeast which prevents the wine from oxidising, but then naturally and mysteriously loses this flor and begins to age oxidatively, requiring increased alcoholic fortification. As the wine ages, it requires additional top-ups of grape-alcohol to prevent spoiling; each top-up is marked with a cross on the barrel. Tres Cortados (three crosses) has therefore been fortified three times and is the mark of an old Palo Cortado. Drink now - 2043.

Scoring 92/100 points by Wine Enthusiast "Initial sniffings offer subtle, earthy, dry scents of tobacco leaf and brown sugar; further air contact releases bittersweet traces of cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa. Palate is smoky, semisweet and slightly honeyed with cinnamon and clove. Finish is long, semisweet." 45% proof.

This bottle is a rare unique find. It is from the era when customs the Government Chemist at Customs House London would check bottles that were being imported into the UK. It was created in 1842 to help safeguard government revenue and this bottle is dated from 1948 when they would have removed some of the contents, tested the Rum and then recorked the bottle and put their stamp onto the wax seal.
