From the good 2013 vintage, this property in the Graves is owned and run by the Cazes family of Lynch Bages. The vines (planted in 1988) are now reaching maturity. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged in one third new oak and the rest in one and two year old barrels from Lynch Bages. This magnum has a medium ruby colour with crunchy red fruits on the nose. The palate is juicy and primary but layered with a little sweet vanilla. The tannins are soft and fine, providing a supple texture to allow this wine a fleshy finish. Drink now - 2038.

Here it showed well, even if I maintain a preference for the 1989. The nose is sultry, broody and takes time to unfurl, almost reluctantly offering up sage and black truffle infused black fruit, developing a subtle aniseed-like aroma with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin. It is not as charming as the 1989, sweeter in the mouth, fleshier perhaps. Scoring 98-100/100 Parker points, this Bordeaux red wine from the very good 1996 vintage is "My tasting notes for this wine begin with the following words "wow, wow, wow!" I had been looking forward to retasting this 1996 since I had it in spring, 1997, and I was not disappointed by its evolution. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and an attention-getting, staggering, sweet nose that offers the essence of black currant fruit, kirsch, and minerals as well as the essence of Leoville-Las-Cases's personality. It is fabulously concentrated, with the sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the wine's most undeniable hallmarks. When measured, the tannin level is extremely high, but you would never know that when tasting this wine because of the massive amount of extract, purity, and virtually perfect equilibrium. Despite its rare combination of unbridled power and complexity, this wine has beaucoup de finesse, as well as a finish that lasts close to 45 seconds. A candidate for a perfect rating, it is a modern day legend in the making. Will it surpass the 1986 and 1982? Time will tell. It is a full-bodied, still backward wine that will appeal to classicists and old line traditionalists given its firm structure and austere tannins. Nevertheless, the color is a healthy deep garnet and the wine exhibits wonderful freshness along with notes of underbrush, damp earth, black currants, cedar and new saddle leather. Well-balanced with good depth, medium to full body, and a tannic (although not excessively so) finish, this may not be the most finesse-styled, elegant Lynch Bages ever produced, but it is an interesting Pauillac that will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring. This lot includes seven empty bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1977 and the wine list from a banquet held at Clarence House in London, the home of the Queen Mother. At the invitation of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother spent three days at the Chateau on the occasion of her official visit in April 1977. To commemorate the visit, and with her permission, Baron Philippe dedicated the 1977 Mouton Rothschild label to her as a personal tribute. To have seven empty bottles from a banquet at Clarence House is a unique piece of Royal memorabilia.

"Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the debut 1991 Valandraud had a slight degradation on the rim with a russet colored core. The bouquet is very pleasant, still fresh and delineated with degraded red berry fruit, leather, dried blood and a touch of chestnut. The palate is fully matured with soft tannin held up by the acidity. It feels loose-knit, a little "saggy" on the mid-palate where I am sure it once had focus and delineation, and it gently fades to a rather austere and earthy finish.
