Scoring 89/100 Parker points and from the very good 1996 vintage, "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Phelan-Segur is actually a wine that I tasted regularly around the turn of the millennium. It is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. It has always been a decent Saint Estèphe and there is much to like about it 20 years on. The bouquet is well defined and fresher than the 1986 Phelan-Segur tasted alongside: blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of crushed stone. It is classier than some might presuppose. The palate is well balanced, fleshy for a 1996 with ample black cherry, raspberry, sage, game and cedar notes. Quite cohesive in the mouth with fine structure, it is not the most sophisticated Saint Estèphe on the block, yet it continues to give satisfying drinking pleasure and complexity. I had been looking forward to retasting this 1996 since I had it in spring, 1997, and I was not disappointed by its evolution. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and an attention-getting, staggering, sweet nose that offers the essence of black currant fruit, kirsch, and minerals as well as the essence of Leoville-Las-Cases's personality. It is fabulously concentrated, with the sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the wine's most undeniable hallmarks. When measured, the tannin level is extremely high, but you would never know that when tasting this wine because of the massive amount of extract, purity, and virtually perfect equilibrium. Despite its rare combination of unbridled power and complexity, this wine has beaucoup de finesse, as well as a finish that lasts close to 45 seconds. A candidate for a perfect rating, it is a modern day legend in the making. Will it surpass the 1986 and 1982? Time will tell. From the very good 1961 vintage, " I have been warned on several occasions to stay away from the slippery slope known as Grand Cru Burgundy. Tonight I slide further down the hill. I had never tasted a mature Richebourg before tonight. This producer is very "old school" which was fine with me. An "ah-so" removed the cork without incident. The color of the wine was ruby with only a slight amount of bricking at the rim. The nose was captivating from the start with mushrooms, damp earth, and a slight anise smell. Nice acidity and the typical earthiness you would expect was present on the palate. After about 30 minutes, a sweetness of fruit lingered in your mouth as the finish lasted a good 45-60 seconds. This is definitely a food wine and it paired absolutely beautifully with dry aged squab. In fact, this may have been the best pairing I have ever had with mature Burgundy (even better than duck). It took me over 15 years to achieve my Burgundy epiphany. I definitely should have listened to my many mentors and stayed far away from this devilish region.
