Our wine buyer unearthed a most interesting find in a house in Manchester. In 1895, the Carmel Wine Company was formed to sell wines of Rishon Le Zion and Zichron Ya’acov Wine Cellars in export markets. Offices were opened in Warsaw, Vienna and Berlin. In 1898, a wine import and marketing company was formed in London. This traded as The Palestine Wine & Trading Co. The Palestine Wine Company started marketing wines with the brand name: PALWIN, which was an abbreviation for PALestine WINe. Palwin was the first brand sold in export markets by the Israeli wine industry. It is also the oldest brand still in existence in the kosher wine world. One wine was differentiated from another by a series of numbers, because new immigrants had trouble reading English, but there was no problem identifying numbers. Nose: it’s remarkable that after so many years you stil get the aromatic hint of polished wood up front. It seems so volatile and it’s usually something I’m missing in old bottles. My guess would be Oloroso then. Remarkably, when taken through a coffee filter this shows its heady side, with wood polish, leather and dried fruits (figs, even some raspberry ganache) but the more particles you leave in the glass, the more it shows toffee notes, coffee and Mokatine candy. In any case this is still quite vibrant, and it kept unfolding throughout the evening. Mouth: pretty perfect, albeit perhaps a little soft due to the bottle ageing. There’s plenty of dried fruits, toasted nuts (hazelnut, pecan pie) with subtle burnt caramel and a hint of herbal tea. It seems lightly abocado (with a touch of sweet wine added to it) which isn’t surprising coming from this era, especially when the wine was really old already. There’s quite some acidity to balance this anyway. Stunning wine, with a long finish on dried fruits, a faint bitter touch and this mocha note again. Drink now - 2043. Palo Cortado is a unique style of sherry which owes its character in equal parts to human intent and natural intervention. The wine begins it's maturation as a tangy Fino sherry, under a protective flor (layer) of yeast which prevents the wine from oxidising, but then naturally and mysteriously loses this flor and begins to age oxidatively, requiring increased alcoholic fortification. As the wine ages, it requires additional top-ups of grape-alcohol to prevent spoiling; each top-up is marked with a cross on the barrel. Tres Cortados (three crosses) has therefore been fortified three times and is the mark of an old Palo Cortado. Drink now - 2043. History H.M. the King to Lord Burton at his seat at Rangemore on the 22nd February, 1902, when his Majesty inspected Bass and Co.’s Brewery and pulled over the levers which started a special mash of 400 barrels of extra strong ale, which for fifty years or more will be known as the King’s Ale. While Edward VII was crowned in 1902, it was in August, months after the beer was brewed, and the beer wasn’t done as a tie-in with the coronation. It almost seems like the king popped round to get a brewery tour while visiting his mate for the weekend. Apart from a small release in 1905, most was cellared until the 1911 coronation of George V. The brewery issued some bottles, but the independent bottlers who handled Bass also received casks, and they released the beer as well. Bass monopolised the King’s Ale name, and the others labelled it as Royal Ale it is a much rarer bottle. Tokay is originally a Hungarian wine, named after the town of Tokay in the north-east of Hungary. Since 1892 this wine has been produced in Massandra and Ay-Danil. All of the wines Ay-Danil Tokay, Massandra Tokay, Livadia Tokay are made from late harvested Furmint and Harslevelu varieties, as in Hungary, though the technique for the production of these unique wines in the Crimea differs from that of the traditional Hungarian ones. The wines can be exceptionally concentrated especially if the grapes have been affected by botrytis (noble rot). These wines require very long ageing to be at their best and are capable of extraordinary longevity. Tokays are enchanting by their full, deep mahogany colour with golden glints, well pronounced grapey bouquet, soft developed nose of lovely honey, with deep hints of ripe quince and quince jam and light aroma of newly-baked rye bread crust. Unique colourfulness, richness of bouquet and full harmonious palate as well as softness and ‘oiliness’ make this wine extraordinary and marvellous. It is a great surprise how all the Massandra Tokays display themselves during long bottle ageing in the collection they maintain their high grapey quality for many years. Maturation merely serves to improve their bouquet and flavour, making them very elegant and exceptionally fine. Fullness and richness, which appear as the result of the great extract, make them extremely harmonious. Aroma of the Furmint and Harslevelu grape varieties, which is typical for young Tokays, turns into a unique bouquet after long bottle maturing. Resinous hints make Tokays even more elegant. Delicate and bright grapey flavours with tones of quince and honey, velvet palate of nectar make these wines so delicate and fragrant that they are reminiscent of perfumes of Nature.. Quite an exotic undertow to this wine on the nose, which although quite oxidised and nutty, has developed all sorts of incense-like smoky and spice notes, but also hints of guava and ripe tropical fruit. On the palate it has a delicious sweetness, that is very rounded and rich, with a full plum and quince jam richness, and delicious lip-smacking tang of Seville orange and grapefruit acidity. The Massandra Winery was founded in 1894 by Tsar Nicholas II on the outskirts of Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, and was the official supplier of fine wines to the royal family whilst they were on vacation at their summer palace in Livadia. Many of the sweet fortified wines from the Massandra Collection are exceptionally rare and incredibly long-lived, with most only reaching maturity at around 50 to 60 years of age. The production of ‘Port’ wine was started by the original Massandra winemaker, Prince Golitzin.
